Model Review: Riot Quest Winter Wasteland Starter Box

Today we take a look at the Starter set for Riot Quest Wintertime Wasteland. I have been excitedly waiting for this to arrive since last summer, and finally I have it!

The minis come stapled into paper bags in this starter. And the dice come in their own little box, which is likely how they will be sold separately which is a great boon for people who want to pick up more dice in the future.

The paper map is glossy and well printed. The glossy nature of it make it hard to photograph. I personally won't be using mine as I also picked up the neoprene map. Though I might possibly use the paper map if I run an event at my local club and need as many maps on tables as possible!

The token sheet has all the same tokens as the previous starter box, although it seems to be a different print run as the cooler and purple chest are rotated at a different angle on this sheet.

The rule book is very similar to the previous version.

Here are the five miniatures included in the set

The cards are unfortunately printed on a slightly thinner card stock than the previous starter set (and the cards which come with individual heroes). Once they are in plastic sleeves it isn't as bad, but its still a little disappointing.

These two gear cards were Kickstarter stretch goals, as far as I can figure they will be in every Winter Wasteland starter.

The bounty, treasure and scrap cards. Its important to note that these are different bounties and treasure cards compared to the previous versions. So will have different goals to meet and rewards to plunder!

A nice addition to the set are these art cards for each of the heroes with some lore on each of them. These are in line with the ones which come in the front of each of the new cardboard "blister" packs that individual Riot Quest heroes come in from now on.

Boomhowler the Destroyer comes in four metal pieces

The body is well cast with minimal mould lines, there are a load of pieces of armour, and other parts from various factions. The left shoulder pad is from a Khador Winterguard, the right shoulder pad is a Cygnar Ironclad's head, he is using a Menoth facemask as a belt buckle (It has a dent in it for the axe handle to go across) and finally he has a Cygnar Sword knight shield on his back, the proportions are slightly different on all of these compared to the models they are originally from though.

There is a square gap under the shield where the barrel, chest and cloth detail attaches.

The head attachment point is an oval dent, it is a decent connection point which I don't think needs pinning.

The back details are crisply cast with lovely detail. The chest on the left is so full its held "shut" by some rope. The barrel on the right looks to be foaming with beer?

Slight mould line runs down his face, which is unfortunate but not too hard to file off.

His axe is taken from a Khador Destroyer Heavy Warjack, though the shaft of the weapon is modelled differently.
The two arms connect with rounded dents quite easily. If you are rough with your minis it might be worth it to pin this part.

Yuri the Hunter comes in a single piece.

Unfortunately there is a fold line with flashing all the way round this model, it was quite tricky to remove this from some of the furry areas of the model. Some patience and time got it done though.

The bear pelt he is wearing has been stated to be Lug...

This Lug... yeah they scaled his head down a bit to fit on Yuri's back. Artistic licence I guess

The underside of the bow had the worst of the flashing, which was fortunate as its a easier process to clean it off of a relatively flatter smoother surface.

Overall Yuri is nicely detailed but let down by mould lines.

Yssylla is a Nyss sorcerer and looks stunning. The asemetric mask is a really nice touch, and the armour plates she does have tie her in the other Legion of Everblight models. She comes in two metal parts.

There is slight flashing on her finger tips but this comes off just by pulling it off. There are few mould lines on her at all and the overall quality of the sculpt is high.

The feathered back piece is nicely cast and fits onto the model with no issues.

Shivers is a single metal piece... he's tiny!!!

Given how small he is the detail on him is lovely. Barely any mould lines. I really like how he is using a Stormblade's buckler as a shield. I will be painting this to match the ones on my Stormblades. I love tying in visual elements like this across my collection.

Stonecold Black Bella comes in five metal parts.

The main body has lovely details and flowing cape, but does suffer from mould lines running across most of the model.

The leg, sword whip and the arm which holds the owl are nicely cast with next to no mould lines.

This owl steals the show! I really wish PP would put out a kit of animals and creatures we could use as decorations.

And here they are all fully assembled.

Shivers wins the title of "Smallest Riot Quest mini" I will be painting the Stormblade buckler to match my Cygnar and the helmet looks like the one from the Steelhead Rhulic gunner so I will paint it to match Steelheads.

Boomhowler will be painted relatively similar to the other two versions of him I have, with the various parts from other factions painted to match those schemes.

I'm thinking this version of Bella, although more detailed than the first version will be slightly easier to paint because I can paint various parts of her like her clothes the same colours as the first version.

I haven't settled on a colour scheme for legion models yet. I've a few Legion models put aside for the future when I do a batch of them for the IKRPG. She will likely be a good test model to help me figure that scheme out.

Most of Yuri will be painted to match Lug... yeah... poor Lug.

Here are the scale shots with Professor Pendrake

The starter sets for Riot Quest are amazing value when you break it down. Even without the card decks, dice, tokens and rules it makes each mini very cheap.

If you didn't already have a starter set for Riot Quest this is a great entry point. And if you owned the pervious set, this will give you the extra dice and tokens to play with people who don't own a starter set without having to use some other method to track action dice!

If you want to pick them up for yourself you can find them here at The Outpost (a UK webstore I'm affiliated with)
Its available on the 26/2/21 so pre-order now to avoid disappointment!
