The Pirate City of Brinewind Boxed Set Review

Today we will take a look at The Pirate City of Brinewind terrain box by Reaper Miniatures.

You get quite a lot in this set, with a good variety of items, all themed around a pirate or water adjacent settlement. 

The boat hull is nicely detailed, extra sacks and lengths of ropes really make it look realistic.

The mast and oars, there are slight bends in some of them which can be fixed with hot water - straighten then cold water.

Seat planks and the tiller are the last parts of the boat. Dry fitting the seats to make sure they all fit before gluing is a must.

This cart is large, and nicely detailed though a little bit thick in the planking. 

I do like how open the bed of the cart is, allowing it to be used for many different cargos.

The wheels come already assembled onto the cart but still turn which is a nice feature. I do wonder how easy it will be to paint though.

This makeshift bar is amazing! I really love all the little details like the carved mermaid sign, the cobbled together look and all the different barrels.

Unfortunately, it does have a slight bend to it. I tried straightening it out and it works somewhat, but still isn't perfect.

These dock sections are quite interesting. They allow a decent amount of modularity in the way they are lined up, though putting a small section on the long side of the longer piece does have a slight mismatch with the uneven plank ends. They do have an exaggerated almost cartoonish look to them which might be off-putting for some, however, I think they look really stylised and fit nicely with a pirate town aesthetic.

The mould lines on these could be rough in places where they cross multiple planks and some rope.

A couple of crate sizes, these are very large crates which makes a nice change from others I've bought. They have quite sharp edges which I made a little more uneven by shaving off a little from the edges.

These barrel stacks are large as well, they are one piece and cannot be separated. They are also large enough that I could see myself never gluing them onto a larger terrain piece, but instead keeping them as scatter terrain.

This barrel rack is a change of pace from stand alone stacks of barrels (which I have examples of from many companies) I think it would likely be better to not glue the barrels into the holder as they do also fit inside the cart.

The barrel stacks don't fit together very well, so I put them in some very hot water then pushed them together and held them together under cold water to set them in place.

This is a cool little shrine/burial place of a pirate. It is the piece in this kit with the roughest mould lines, but they didn't take too long to remove. Not sure how I would use this yet, if you have any suggestions let me know!

Neat table and chairs set. I know these will be in my Five Fingers bar for sure!

The chairs and table are a decent size for 28mm minis, a little bit small but could be worse for sure.

They even put wood grain on the underside of the table which was nice but unnecessary. 

I have to assume this is some poor soul off to meet their watery end... the mould lines on this required delicate removable because of all the rope and creases but its a unique piece for sure.

And a small wooden chest which has some tiny padlocks, nicely little addition.

The tiny barrels and the bucket are nice to add onto another terrain piece or use as basing for a mini, I wouldn't want to paint them up purely as scatter terrain as they are too small.

Here are some examples of what the cart can fit in the back. I don't plan to add a horse to this cart to make my life easier its just going to be terrain. 

Overall this is a great terrain kit, though I would offer its not enough by itself to populate a table, it will add a lot of interest to larger terrain pieces as well as basing and dioramas.

Well worth picking up, especially if you can find it discounted!

Model Review: Burrows & Badgers Starter Warband B, Mouse Burglar & Fox Rogue

I recently a long time ago (I really should finish and publish articles quicker...) started playing an RPG called Humblewood, and being who I am I wanted a miniature to represent my character. I'm playing as a fox so had been looking around for something fitting.

I watch a lot of hobby content on Youtube and there was one guy in particular who provided the answer, Burrows and Badgers!

He focuses on terrain making videos, mainly for games like Necromunda, Lord of the rings and Burrows and Badgers.

I quickly found the fox miniature I wanted and while I was there... I ended up picking up a starter warband as well because the minis looked really fun to paint. I had recently sold a few things personally so I had a bit of spare cash in my hobby fund so I picked up the rule book as well!

So here are the minis I picked up as well as the dice which came with the starter warband.

Sparrow warrior. I really like the style of the way this bird is mounted onto its base, it can often be tricky to pose flying models. I like all the extra details across this mini, with sword and shield and a pouch.

There is a slight mould line running down the shield and left wing, this was fairly easy to remove however with a few minutes work with a hobby file.

I think the face of this bird is really expressionate, which for a bird is impressive. I think it will be interesting to paint, I will have to finally learn how to paint eyes for sure!

Rabbit archer. This is a really neat mini there are a couple of points which required a little clean up such as where the bottom of the bow is attached to the rabbits knee.

The quiver is closed which is really nice, not something I've often seen on archer miniatures.

There is a slightly unfortunate mould line across the eye here, luckily it's not too big and I was able to file it away without losing any detail.

Squirrel ranger has a really nice pose readying an arrow about to aim. I really like the way the tail feels front and centre and a highlighted part of the mini by having it across the front.

Shrew-zerker is simply an awesome mini. Tons of character in this little guy.

Slight mould lines can be seen on the arm armour which file off really easily.

Mouse nun. A pretty simple character but very nicely executed.

Otter pirate. Well... this sculpt is simply fantastic! What's not to like? Otter and pirate! My five year old loves this mini and I look forward to using it in our games in the future.

Mouse burglar. This little guy came free with the rulebook which was pretty neat. It's a really nice character concept and I think it will work great for narrative scenarios.

Fox rogue. Well this is the mini which incited the whole purchase! Such a cool and dynamic sculpt, I'm really impressed with this. I think it will be a lot of fun to paint, though I think it will be quite challenging. 

Over all I think these are some fantastic miniatures with tons of character. Even if you have no intention of playing Burrows and badgers these minis are well worth buying just to paint. I've been working my way through painting these in the time since I started writing this review. (I really do need to get quicker at my turn around)
