Monstrous Spider Painted

My Monstrous Spider by Heresy Miniatures is finally done!
It's to my shame that it's taken me five years to get around to painting it. I got it during Heresy Miniatures kickstarter.
I looked at the models when they arrived back then, on this blog, you can find the unboxing here.

I actually got reminded to paint it due to them having a sale on and I looked through their site and was reminded...
On that note their sale is on until the 1st Sept its 25% off. I am not affiliated with them at all, I just really like their minis and have bought from them a few times over the years.

I painted the base and its rocks a few weeks ago when I painted similar basing on a different model. (My batch painting ways never leave me)
I painted up the spider in one session this Sat night while I was GMing the IKRPG online.
I streamed it on twitch and had my painting cam on (the painting cam was a viewer request once people learnt I was painting while GMing) I'm still getting used to keeping the model I'm painting under the camera though...
You can find my twitch channel here I stream IKRPG every Sat evening (8pm UK time) and randomly do painting streams and live games as and when I can.

If there is one part of the paint job I'm less happy with its the eyes, they aren't my best work but I'm happy enough. I was mainly pleased to have it finished in a single session so I guess I'm ok to just overlook it.

I'm really happy with how the spines and vein looking ridges turned out though.

The black paint is an old GW starter set black which always looks glossy so I haven't used it much over the years. I save it for projects like this where the glossy look is desired.

I made the rocks out of multiple layers of cork sheet. I tried to make the layers varied and look as if it could be natural formations. Painting it was simple, just dark grey then dry brushed light grey.

Having multiple layers of rock allowed me to pose the spider in a more organic way, with each of its legs being on a different height of rock it makes it have a sense of motion as if the spider is climbing across the rocks.

Adding patches of dirt to other levels of the rocks as well as the bottom layer helps to give it a more realistic look I think.

And here is a scale shot with Professor Pendrake (30mm human)
It really is a large model for its mass, the thin legs really make it take up more space.
I'm looking forward to pitting my players against it some day!
It really was a fun and easy model to paint!

Harlowe Holdemhigh Painted

Harlowe Holdemhigh is painted! He was a pretty easy to paint model once I figured out what general colour scheme I wanted for him.

His face was a little tricky to paint given how high his collar is pulled up over his face with the hat also obscuring access to it. I went with the glowing blue eyes I typically do for magic users, but also painting his eyebrows as they happened to be sculpted onto the model.

The runes on the side of his gun are in the Rhulic style which cements these "spellstorm pistols" as his own. I had seem some people question if they used to belong to Caine but they are visually distinct.
I painted the runes in the same way I do for the Cygnaran gunmages I've painted. I paint them white then once its dry apply a blue wash then repaint the metal to the surrounding areas.

Edit: I've been told that the runes spell out "Kiss kiss bang bang" which is a pretty cool little Easter egg!
Thanks to Nate for pointing this out to me!

Here is the scale shot with Professor Pendrake. As expected Harlow is short - but he's a dwarf... so yeah...
I like how he turned out and am looking forward to getting him on the table now he's painted.

Model Review: Chuck Dogwood

Today we take a look at Chuck Dogwood who is a Guard class hero in Riot Quest and a Circle Orboros solo in Hordes. He comes in two metal pieces.

In my opinion he is the "wackiest" Riot Quest character when viewed from a Warmachine and Hordes perspective. I wrote a article about which Riot Quest minis fit in with the Warmachine and Hordes asthetic which you can find here if you are interested.

The body and left are all come as one part, making this one of the easiest to assemble Riot Quest models.

On his cape is an elvis inspired Storm Raptor in, I'm guessing rhinestones? It's going to be tough to paint I know that.

He has a real crazed look to him as if he has been off on his own in the wilds a little too long. The face and beard are well sculpted.

Unfortunately there is a pretty bad mould line which runs all the way from this wide of his hood, over the top of his head - down his arm and into the staff. It took a long time filling this to clean it up, which is a shame.

His Wold assistant and constant companion is a puppet on his right hand.  Its nicely sculpted for such a small thing but does suffer from mould lines as well sadly.

And here he is assembled and cleaned up. The time saved on assembly went into cleaning up the mould lines instead for this mini. Though once I filed them all smooth you can't really tell.

Here is the scale shot with Professor Pendrake, he fits in perfectly for scale... but not so much for Warmahordes in my opinion... BUT he is great for Riot Quest which is why I bought him in the first place! I think he looks like a really interesting guard class hero who brings placement abilities which really set him apart from the other guards.

If you want to pick them up for yourself you can find them here at The Outpost (a UK webstore I'm affiliated with)

Riot Quest Treasure Chests Painted

Quick post today, I painted up the treasure chests for Riot Quest!
I put them onto 30mm bases as I wanted to paint the rims of the bases to match the hero class that can open them for free. This only applies to the treasure deck in the base game though, the treasure deck which comes with Flugwug and these chests has different requirements to open them for free based on things like various stats.
I did this to make it a little easier to remember which is which and also make them easier to pick up as well.

The wood grain was easy to paint and really allowed me to give it a weathered look. The chest on the right I was struggling to figure out what colour to paint it that wouldn't clash with the orange base rim, dark grey worked pretty well. I also gave it the same blue "powered" look I use on a lot of models.

The Safe on the left I actually wanted to look quite plain and boring, so I'm actually pleased with how it turned out. The "laser mine" on the right reminds me of the old WW2 sea mine (deactivated) that was on the beach I grew up near. I tried to paint the red laser bits as if they have a shiny look to them.

The clockwork chest on the left reminded me a lot of the Convergence aesthetic with its cogs and gears so I painted it in a similar colour palette to other Convergence models I have painted. I like how it turned out. The safe built into the rock was the most fun to paint for me, I really like the mushrooms growing out of the rock round the back and wanted to paint them in a way which makes them stand out so I went with red with white spots.

I love that Privateer Press made physical models for things like these treasure chests and the Spawn gates. If they hadn't I would have likely tried to make my own as I really like having that visual element to games I play.
