Labyrinth The Board Game Painted

Today I'll be showing off the Labyrinth Board game I painted for my mum last Christmas.
I've been doing more hobby projects as gifts for the last couple of years and continue to enjoy it.
Though it can be quite stressful to have a solid deadline to work towards, as normally I flit between projects (as I imagine most hobbyists do).

Sarah was a challenge for sure. I struggled to paint her face and eyes to the standard I would like, I made the concession to let it go.
I did add twiddly gold detailing on the waistcoat which is brighter than in the film but I found it hard to get a 100% match.

With Jareth I had similar issues with the face so again decided not to stress about it. I enjoyed painting some texture onto the trousers giving them a sketchy look to add some visual interest.
(yes the Bowie bulge is not as big as some people would like it to be lol)

Painting the bone details on his cape was easy enough, I've had a decent amount of practice painting the various wargaming miniatures over the years!

Hoggle was a fun little guy to paint and to follow a theme I again didn't paint his eyes, though his face being larger did allow for more detail in the nose and eyebrows which was nice.

The dirtyish looking white shirt was a joy to paint with its various folds, the other parts of his clothes are just various shades of browns leaving him a rather plain looking mini in the end but that is rather fitting for him.

Sir Didymus and his trusty steed Ambrosius were fun but challenging to paint. His is the most detailed of the models. It was fun painting his fur with its various colours fading into each other.

When painting the caparison hanging on either side of Ambrosius I had intended to paint more details and getting it screen accurate, however given the size and my limited skill at patterned freehand painting then combine that with Christmas rapidly approaching I decided quarter colours would be enough to give the idea of what was there without driving me insane!

Ludo was the most enjoyable to paint for me. I have really been liking trying out new ways to paint fur and in different colours so he was a great variation for that practice with his ginger fur.

The brown/grey skin tone was tricky to match to the screen version but I think I did a pretty decent job, as well as the redish brown eyes.

And they fit quite nicely back into the box on display!
I hope my mum likes the game, she said she was happy with the painting at least.

Ready, Steady, Worm! Board game Painted

I painted the board game pieces for this Labyrinth themed board game Ready Steady Worm!

It looks like a fun enough game. I got it as a birthday present for my sister who loves Labyrinth.

The board game pieces come in coloured plastic as you can see above. I carefully removed the mould lines on them before painting.

The iconic one from the film which this whole game is based on. He was the most fun to paint for me.

The eyes were very challenging to paint but very worth the effort they took. Blending the brown towards orange and adding pupils and the white reflective dots as finishing touches.

Anyone who has painted yellow before will be aware of why this was the toughest to paint... Yellow requires so many more coats to cover nicely...

I'm really happy with how these turned out.
I made sure to varnish them to make sure the paint doesn't rub off during games.
I hope my sister enjoys them game and the way I painted them, but what do you think?

Viper Tatzylwurms Painted

The Viper Tatzylwurms for the Iron Kingdoms board game Widowers Wood are finished!
I've wanted to paint these for a long time but they have never really been a priority to be honest.
Recently I was in an online lecture (I'm 3rd year at uni as a mature student) and found my hands idle so started base coating the snakes... I finished them up with details and highlights the next day so they turned out to be a very quick 11 minis to add to the display cupboard!

Like other Widowers wood minis I have finished I painted the raised lines on each side the same colour as the plastic they are made from which is only important when you play the board game.
I also added some purple flowers to the purple one as its the boss version in the board game so I thought this would help it stand out more.

They have sooo many eyes, I painted these with the glossy black paint I have to give them a glassy eyed look. The fronds or whatever they are on the back of its head I blended the colours starting from green up to yellowish towards the tips.

As these are board game minis some of them lacked definition in some of their teeth so I had to do what I could with paint to make them more distinct.

This is the artwork from the Iron Kingdoms Unleashed book's entry for Viper Tatzylwurms and its what I used as a reference when painting them. I wanted them to look as close to is as possible without making them take ages to paint.

And here is a scale shot with Professor Pendrake, he doesn't look too thrilled to be surrounded by these snakes...
These were good fun to paint and will see more use in the Iron Kingdoms RPG than they will with the board game (Though I am looking forward to having that game fully painted one day!)
I really would love for Privateer Press to give these snakes some rules for Minions, either as lesser warbeasts or as a unit like the Stoneward & Woldstalkers for Circle (see below) it would be cool to see them on the table more!

I'm running a Riot Quest painting competition! If you want to find out more about it the details are here!

Swamp Gobber River Raiders Painted

So I finished off a lot of Gobbers!!! Among this lot are 9 River Raiders, the Gobbers from the two Iron Kingdoms board games; Undercity & Widowers Wood and finally a IKRPG character who is very dear to my heart.

The River Raiders are a lovely set of models, you get three in a blister pack and their heads are separate which allows you to mix and match them to have all nine look different!
I love this and posed each one a little bit differently as well to really help make them look unique as well as mixing up the colours used to paint them.

I painted all the Gobbers together by picking a random colour (out of a set I had picked which I thought appropriate for various clothing) and then painting a different piece of clothing that colour on each Gobber. A wrist band on one, then shorts on the next, vest on another... I did this with a lot of different colours to break up any uniformity.
Its the same technique I used when I painted my pirate models, which I found worked well.

These guys have the "beanie hat" looking head, which is my least favourite but don't mistake me here,,, I still love them! All my Gobbers are precious to me...

I love the screaming eye patch head, I think it might be my favourite!

Tricorn hat and cigar has a lot of charm as well though... Gobbers truly are a joy to paint.

I tried my best to paint a lit cigar with an orange thin line followed by grey ash at the end. I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Next up are the Gobbers from the Undercity board game, Pog is the Player character mechanik who controls the groups Warjack Doorstop (Which I haven't finished painting yet)

Pog's model is based off a Cygnar Gobber field mechanik with the following alterations (that I can see, there may be more) the left hand and helmet its holding have been replaced with the arm holding the oil can. Where the helmet would have been a "flight cap" looking hat with goggles has been added. A Trencher backpack has been added.
There is some missing detail and areas where things blend together with these three as they are the oldest of PP's board game minis.

The Gobber cutthroats are the same sculpt as an old IKRPG model. I painted their scabbards the same colour as the plastic they are made from as this is how you know which to activate at what time during the game. I also painted the line on the base arcs that same colour.

These are the gobbers which are included in the Widowers Wood board game. I found the colour swapping technique for different parts of their clothes.
I painted the eye patch/bandana's the same colours as their plastic but this time there is also the purple one for the "boss gobber".

And this little guy is Rez who was my old IKRPG character. The model is the old metal IKRPG model which the Undercity ones are the same sculpt as. I converted the model slightly by removing the dagger from the right hand and replacing it with an old Ork stick bomb and I added a second one to his belt. (to represent a grenade) I also cut off the pointed hood from his back and added a backpack with a coil of rope. (every good adventurer needs a coil of rope!) He is an Intellectual Alchemist thief and I miss him... (he may return one day...)

This metal model has better sculpted detail than the board game plastic ones do, and as he is my character I spent more time painting him.

What do you think of my gobbers? I know I have a soft spot for the little guys!

It took me a long time to get these painted but I'm really glad that I did and really look forward to using the River Raiders with both my Minions and Pirate armies.
